How to Get More Out of Travel: A Simple Framework for Deeper, More Meaningful Experiences

I recently came across the trend of “looksmaxxing,” the idea of maximizing one’s physical attractiveness.

Naturally, I did what any reasonable person would do: I applied it to travel.
What if, instead of looksmaxxing… we focused on experience-maxxing?
In other words:
How do you get the absolute most meaning, depth, and lasting impact out of your travel experiences?
Because here’s the truth: most travel doesn’t stick.
Why Most Travel Fades
Many trips are a whirlwind:
New places
New food
New experiences
And in the moment, it’s incredible. But later? It often becomes:
“Oh yeah, I went there once.”
Not because it wasn’t good, but because it didn’t fully take root. The experience was intense… but not deeply processed.
Why Deeper Travel Matters
You could argue that maximizing travel is about getting the most out of your investment: your time, money, and energy.
That’s true, but it’s not the real reason. The real reason is this:
You have one life. You will never see everything. So when you do experience something meaningful, why wouldn’t you want it to shape you?
Not everyone wants that. Some people just want to relax—and that’s completely valid.
But if you’re someone who thinks:
“Why wouldn’t I want to connect more deeply with the world?”
Then this approach is for you.

What Is “Experience-Maxxing” in Travel?
I’m defining experience-maxxing as:
Choosing depth over breadth. Fewer, richer, more meaningful experiences that actually stay with you.
(Not to be confused with trying to do more, see more, and pack your schedule—this is the opposite.)
How to Get More Out of Travel (The 3-Step Framework)
If you want your travel to actually stick, cognitive science points to a simple process:
1. Prepare the Mind
Before you go:
Learn about the place
Build context
Create a mental framework
This gives your brain something to attach new experiences to.
2. Experience Fully
While you’re there:
Be present
Notice details
Engage with what’s around you
This is where the experience happens, but it’s not enough on its own.
3. Reflect Afterward
After the trip:
Think about what it meant
Revisit moments
Connect it to your life
This is what transforms experience into lasting meaning.
Why This Works
When you follow this process, something changes. The trip doesn’t just become a memory; it becomes part of how you see the world.
Instead of remembering:
what you did
You remember:
what it meant
Final Thought
Not every trip needs to be optimized for depth. But when travel is special—when it’s something you’ve been looking forward to, something that matters—it’s worth going deeper.
Because you won’t remember everything. But you can choose what stays with you.
